Diwali 2026: Lakshmi-Ganesh Puja & Rudraksha Guide

Diwali begins before the diyas are lit. A corner of the home is cleaned, sweets are shared, old commitments are remembered and the family makes time for prayer. Those ordinary preparations give the evening its meaning.

In 2026, Diwali and Lakshmi Puja fall on Sunday, 8 November. Many households worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha that evening. For devotees who already wear Rudraksha or use a japa mala, the festival can also be a meaningful day to begin a steady prayer routine. No bead is required for the puja, and no bead can guarantee wealth or success.

Date and muhurat: Lakshmi Puja is observed when Amavasya overlaps the local evening Pradosh period. The exact time depends on your city. Check a local Panchang or your family priest before making a time-specific sankalp. For Delhi, the published Lakshmi Puja window is 5:54–7:50 pm on 8 November 2026; do not apply that timing to another city without checking. Delhi Panchang source.

What does Diwali celebrate?

Many North Indian families remember Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya with Maa Sita and Lakshmana. The evening home puja honours Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. Elsewhere, the night may also be observed as Kali Puja, Bandi Chhor Divas or in remembrance of Lord Mahavira’s nirvana. Customs and the sequence of festival days vary by community and region.

Diwali is part of a wider festive period. If you are planning the days before it, read our Dhanteras 2026 puja guide.

A simple Lakshmi–Ganesha Puja at home

Follow your family’s established method if you have one. This short sequence is for anyone who needs a starting point:

  1. Clean the puja space, bathe and wear clean clothes before your local evening muhurat.

  2. Place images or murtis of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi on a clean cloth or chowki.

  3. Keep a diya, flowers, clean water, roli, akshat, fruit and prasad ready. Add a kalash or other items according to your tradition.

  4. If your family follows the custom, place account books, work tools or new purchases near the puja area.

  5. Make a simple sankalp, remembering the date, place and intention of your worship.

  6. Offer prayers to Lord Ganesha first, then Goddess Lakshmi. Include Sharda or Kubera Puja if it belongs to your household practice.

  7. Chant a familiar mantra or stotra, perform aarti and share prasad.

  8. Keep lit diyas stable and away from curtains, children and pets.

An elaborate ceremony is not necessary. Make enough time to pray without rushing the family through it.

Mantras you may chant

For Lord Ganesha: ॐ गं गणपतये नमः — Om Gam Ganapataye Namah
For Goddess Lakshmi: ॐ श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः — Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah
For Lord Shiva or general Rudraksha practice: ॐ नमः शिवाय — Om Namah Shivaya

Chant 11, 27 or 108 times according to your capacity. If your guru has taught you a particular mantra or method, follow that guidance.

Is Rudraksha needed for Diwali Puja?

No. You can perform Lakshmi–Ganesha Puja without wearing or purchasing Rudraksha. Some devotees choose to place a bead in the puja and wear it afterwards; others begin a regular japa practice with a mala. That is a personal devotional choice. If you would like to keep both beads in your puja space, the Diwali Lakshmi Ganesh Rudraksha Puja Set includes one regular-size 7 Mukhi Rudraksha, one regular-size Ganesh Rudraksha and a storage box. Each bead comes with an independent laboratory certificate. Lakshmi Ganesh idols, diyas and other puja items are not included.

If Mukhi types are new to you, start with our Rudraksha selection guide. Choose according to a practice you intend to continue, not a promise of a particular result.

Which Rudraksha is relevant to Diwali?

Devotional focus Option Why it appears here
Mahalakshmi worship 7 Mukhi Nepali Rudraksha Traditionally associated with Goddess Mahalakshmi
Ganesha worship 8 Mukhi Nepali Rudraksha Traditionally associated with Lord Ganesha
Natural Ganesha form Nepali Ganesh Rudraksha Has a natural trunk-like projection; distinct from Mukhi count
Simple daily Shiva prayer 5 Mukhi Nepali Rudraksha A common choice for regular wearing and prayer
Vishnu devotion 10 Mukhi Nepali Rudraksha Optional, less direct Diwali connection through Lord Janardana

7 Mukhi: For devotees focused on Lakshmi Puja, 7 Mukhi Nepali Rudraksha is the most direct traditional association in this guide. It can be a reminder to approach prosperity with honest work, judgement and generosity. It cannot remove debt or produce financial gain on its own.

8 Mukhi: The 8 Mukhi Nepali Rudraksha is associated with Lord Ganesha. Someone starting a new project around Diwali may choose it as a devotional reminder to act with patience and clarity.

Natural Ganesh Rudraksha: A Nepali Ganesh Rudraksha has a naturally formed trunk-like projection. It is a form description, not another name for 8 Mukhi. Check the product’s stated Mukhi, origin, natural formation and certificate rather than relying on the word “Ganesh” alone.

5 Mukhi: The 5 Mukhi Nepali Rudraksha is an everyday option associated with Lord Shiva in the Kalagni Rudra tradition. Its place here is daily prayer after the festival, not a special Lakshmi Puja claim. Read the 5 Mukhi wearing guide for more detail.

10 Mukhi: The 10 Mukhi Nepali Rudraksha is traditionally linked with Lord Janardana or Vishnu. It is an optional choice for someone whose own practice follows that tradition; it is not needed for Lakshmi–Ganesha Puja.

You do not need to wear several beads together because they appear in a festival article. One meaningful choice is enough.

Which japa mala should you choose?

Your regular practice Mala Suggested mantra in this guide
Lakshmi mantra 7 Mukhi Japa Mala Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah
Ganesha mantra Ganesh 9 Mukhi Japa Mala Om Gam Ganapataye Namah
Everyday Shiva prayer 5 Mukhi Indonesian Japa Mala Om Namah Shivaya

The 7 Mukhi mala has 108 Indonesian 7 Mukhi beads of approximately 9 mm and one Nepali 7 Mukhi Guru bead. Its Mahalakshmi association makes it a relevant choice for someone who intends to continue Lakshmi mantra japa.

The Ganesh 9 Mukhi mala contains 108+1 Indonesian Rudraksha beads of approximately 10 mm and features a natural 9 Mukhi Ganesh formation. The 9 Mukhi association is with Maa Durga; its trunk-like Ganesh formation is the reason it may appeal to a Ganesha devotee. It is a distinct product from an 8 Mukhi bead. Our Ganesh Rudraksha puja guide explains the wider devotional context.

The 5 Mukhi mala has 108+1 Indonesian beads and is offered in several bead sizes. It is a practical choice for someone planning daily Shiva mantra japa beyond Diwali. Choose a size and weight that feel comfortable in your hands.

A mala may be worn if comfortable and consistent with your tradition. Some devotees prefer to keep a separate mala solely for japa.

How to use a japa mala

Begin with the bead next to the Guru bead and chant once per bead. The Guru bead is not counted among the 108 repetitions. When you return to it, stop or turn the mala around for another round instead of crossing it. Handle the thread gently and store the mala clean and dry. If one full round does not fit your family puja, 11 or 27 repetitions are also fine.

Can you start wearing Rudraksha on Diwali?

Yes. If you wish, gently clean and dry the bead, place it in the puja space, offer a prayer and chant Om Namah Shivaya or the mantra associated with your practice. Then wear it on a comfortable cotton or silk thread or in a suitable setting that does not damage the bead. A Monday is also commonly chosen for first wearing; Diwali is a personal auspicious choice, not a requirement.

Men and women can wear Rudraksha. Follow any discipline taught by your family, guru or sampradaya. Children should wear beads or malas only with adult supervision and a safe fit.

Avoid prolonged soaking in milk, oil or water. Keep Rudraksha away from soap, shampoo, perfume and chemical cleaners. Wipe away moisture gently and check mala threads and knots from time to time. Natural differences in shape, shade and texture are expected.

Check authenticity before buying

Festival offers can create urgency. Look for a clear product description showing origin, Mukhi or special formation, bead size or count, certification and the seller’s contact and return information. Simple floating, colour or coin tests cannot conclusively establish authenticity.

Every Mahadev Mala Rudraksha product includes an independent laboratory certificate at no additional cost; the issuing laboratory may vary by product. X-ray examination is an optional paid add-on for eligible items, and its findings should be read within the issuing laboratory’s methods and scope. Read the certification process, original Rudraksha guide and Nepali versus Indonesian comparison before deciding.

Frequently asked questions

When is Diwali in 2026?

Diwali and Lakshmi Puja fall on Sunday, 8 November 2026. Check the evening puja muhurat for your own city.

Which Rudraksha is most relevant to Lakshmi Puja?

7 Mukhi is traditionally associated with Goddess Mahalakshmi. It is optional; you can perform the puja without any Rudraksha.

Is 8 Mukhi the same as a Ganesh Rudraksha?

No. “8 Mukhi” describes the count of natural Mukhi lines. “Ganesh Rudraksha” describes a naturally formed trunk-like projection. A Ganesh formation may also have a stated Mukhi count.

Do I need a special mala for Diwali?

No. If you already have a suitable mala, you may use it according to your practice. If choosing a new one, match it to the mantra you plan to continue chanting.

Does Rudraksha guarantee wealth or protection?

No. Spiritual associations are matters of traditional belief. A bead cannot guarantee a financial or personal outcome.

Let the practice continue after Diwali

Once the diyas have been put away, keep one small sankalp: a few minutes of daily japa, a commitment you have delayed, or a more thoughtful approach to spending and giving. If you wear Rudraksha, let it remind you of that intention. The action still comes from you.

Shubh Deepavali.
